I should have titled this page, "So..you want to be a witch, huu?" I hear that alot, and I simply don't have time to explain things during my Tarot reading hours. So, I will try to give you some of the very basics here. I hope I am able to answer a few questions and at least point you in the right direction.

Witchcraft and magik are interesting to many people, both those who do it, and those
who are just curious. I have no intention of trying to convince you of anything, and I refuse to write yet another of those intelligent, but, oh, so boring, "dispelling
the misconceptions" articles. Good grief, if I hear one more witch lecture on demon
wichcraft versus benign magic, black magic and white magic, sorcery, and voodism and hinduism,or another yawn session on wicca versus pagan versus druid versus neo pagan I will turn myself into a frog and hop under a damp step and never come out. I'll tell you what it is. SHHH...here's the big secret...I use energy to change things. Yes, that's what I do. It's magik. There are no colors of magik. That is a lie and you people know it. Most of the time a person tries to do good things, but, everyone has an off day, or midnight. I try my best to be a good witch, but, I fear the only one who was ever ALWAYS good, was Glinda, from Oz. Sigh. She had a cool dress too and a sparkly hat. The other witches had ugly clothes, faces like a hatchet, and goofy socks. This is because THEY were bad witches. And of course they were hidiously murdered in the end (as any good childrens film should end.) I am not from Oz. I am from Iowa. I live in a small frame house, and I dress however I feel like, and I don't give a fig wart or a hog fart what anyone else thinks. I celebrate the pagan hollidays, but, I like Christmas lights too. Mostly I keep  to myself and try not to be bothered by the mortals. (You can laugh, that was a joke.) Witches are not a terribly serious lot, no more than Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Methodists, Athiests, or whatever. We are just people who believe there is power to be tapped into, it's all around us. It is the power of the universe. The power of nature, and the
power of other living things. There are many different kinds of witches, but, that is the universal tie. The belief in energy and our power to use it.

Many people hear the word witch and think of evil things, or Halloween tricks, this is not the case. I am a Pagan, that is my choice in religion, because I like the old ways, the legends, the idea that there might be a higher power in female form and thought, but, that has not much to do with magic. I know many Christian witches, they simply modify thier work to fit thier beliefs. And they usually work in secret. Magic is the use of energy to change things. And it works. There are three major aspects of magic that no witch ignores. The elementals, which form the earth and who have some kind of spirits left here since time began. I have seen them and so have others. They are, 1. North, Salamaders, fire. 2. East, slyphs, air, 3. West, gnomes, earth, and 4. South, ondines, water. They can be called upon to help, but, if not respected, they can be nasty. These things are as real to me as Christian angels. I have only been lucky enough to see slyphs once, but, they are incredible. Fairy or earth spirits do not look like they do in art, they are very odd and fleeting. Ondines are my personal elemental and when I saw them the first time I was shocked at thier appearance. Anyway, I embrace them and never slight them for they are a major force in magic and life. Indians had other names for them, as do many religions. Maybe they are like the Christian cherubians, the gaurdians of the tree of life in the bible. But, to me they are the elements, and they recieve gifts, offerings, tokens, anything to show I recognize and respect them.
The next part of all magic revolves around the moon. There are three major aspects to the moon, as there is the trinity in Christianity. They are called by many names, but, are the same. I use the old Pagan names. They are Diana of the full moon, the mother, she is full power and used for many spells needed to emphasize your magic. Selene is the waxing, or new moon, she is the virgin moon, a time of hopefulness, a time to ask for wishes, hopes and dreams. A time of sweet and gentle power. The third moon is Hecate', she is the crone, the waning moon, the dark moon. She is best left to experiencenced witches for she is tricky. I am without a uterus due to an operation, I am, in magic terms, a crone. This sounds funny, but I am in the service of Hecate' now and freely practice my magic with her, and she has been very good to me. I fear her no longer, for I respect her. She is typically used to push away bad things, break hexs, and in general she is considered the widdershins moon (widdershins is backwards, deosil is foreward). Science knows the moon keeps the earths balance in it's orbit and controls the tides. Witches recognise the significance of these workings in the energy we use. There are other moons, the most recognised being the Blue moon, the thirteenth full moon of the year, but those can wait for now. It is a bit complicated, isn't it?
The third tool of magic is meditation and calling the energy to you. I have worked for years to learn this. It is not easy. Clearing your mind of all thought and concentrating soley on a cone of energy, pulling it down, harnassing it, and learning to use it is the hardest part of witchcraft, but, it can be mastered. It takes patience and commitment. I was born to this, I have been a witch since childhood. Still I continue to struggle and learn. This ability has enabled me to make my living from my love of all things magical and that in itself is some kind of magic.
So, that is the basics, later if you want to know, I will tell you about tools of magic, consecration, circle drawing, spirit work, herbs (plants are major in spellwork) and  anything else you need to know. Or you may write to me with questions at
https://widdershinsby3.tripod.com/
You can see why people come to me and spend money to have me work the spell, they simply want something and don't want to learn or study. It's understandable. And I am not greedy, I will never "spell" on anyone without thier permission, I refuse to charge ridiculous prices, and for some who really need it, it's free. Spiritual readings for parents who've lost children are always free. Just remember that the true witches creed is "Do as you will, but, harm none".. this I take to heart. I have never deliberatly hurt anyone or anything with magic. It is abuse of power and not acceptable. I hope you enjoyed reading this, and understand a little about magic. Now go read and study and find you own way, for that is the true way of magic and witchcraft.
